The Christopher Cutts Gallery is proud to release 'William Ronald - The Great' for our exhibition celebrating the centenary year of Ronald's birth. 

This exhibition surveys Ronald’s remarkable career, from his early years with Painters Eleven and his time in New York to works from the latter half of his career, including paintings from his final years.

Born on August 13, 1926, Ronald was one of Canada’s most influential abstract painters and a central figure in the development of postwar Canadian abstraction. As founder of Painters Eleven, he played a pivotal role in bringing abstract art to the forefront of Canada’s cultural landscape.

Following the formation of Painters Eleven, Ronald enjoyed a celebrated career spanning several decades, including an important period in New York when he was represented by the renowned Kootz Gallery. Upon returning to Toronto, he continued to expand his artistic practice while also pursuing a successful career in broadcasting.

The exhibition features early watercolours on paper, as well as two exceptional paintings that were included in a 1961 exhibition at the Kootz Gallery. Also on view are paintings from Ronald’s final years, a period that some consider to have produced among the most compelling work of his career.

The book features 39 photos of his paintings, including 21 from the exhibition, detail shots of some of the works, an essay by Gary Michael Dault, and a biography by Lawrence Brissenden.
